Shona Heath - Bringing The Outside In

Shona Heath is one of Britain's leading Creative Directors and Set Designers. She uses interesting techniques in her work such as using different materials to create a contemporary vision within a space. Her style is mainly quite feminine with a story in mind for her sets and installations, experimenting with scale and colour.

The reason I chose to look into Shona Heath was because I liked the way she has a distinct design signature and also how she can make an old classic styled garment look so contemporary with the way the set has been designed.

The things I admire about Shona Heath's work is that she uses key natural shapes and elements such as water, florals, leaves and others from the natural outdoors and brings it to an inside space. This looks visually pleasing to the eye as using the shapes in a cut-out form with card gives it the contemporary element instead of using fake flowers which seems cliché and naff as we have the modern technology and ideas to create something as wonderful as this. Another reason I love Shona Heath's work is because she uses a limited colour pallet which draws the eyes to the focal point of the image. This to me is a great concept, as her sets are quite busy and could distract the viewer from the garment itself. So for an example, by using a subtle main background colour and a bright foreground, our eyes then draw to the garment which is the main point of the image.
