Past, Present and Futurism

Over Christmas, I have been working on a Brief for Paul Smith with the trend story of 'techno futuristic' and the outcome of digital. Through my research, I came over the Italian art movement of Futurism. When I first saw images of this, the first things to come to mind were abstract and surrealism. When looking at Futurist art, you instantly see structure, engineering style industrialism, speed of movement, strength and intimidation through the colouring. Metallic shades of greys and blues really show a sense of the future and maybe thoughts that it could be a negative or cold space. In fashion, when we think of techno futurism, we automatically think of harsh structure and metallics. However, the reasoning for futurism was also for the way movement of time and speed is going. We don't see many garments in futuristic inspired shows with movement. All fabrics of choice seem to be stiff and structured, therefore, I feel not many designers have really captured the full meaning of this art movement in modern times.
When i look at Futurism, I automatically have connotations with Surrealism. The similarities of these art movements are that you can depict whats in the images, however, the scaling, and colouring may be under or over-exaggerated to create a focal point. Another similarity is that it may not be realistic. An example of this is that futurism has more of a realistic vision for the future, although may not be 100% accurate or correct, however surrealism is supposed to be the opposite of realistic and make things look abnormal to what realistic visions are.
