Today, I woke up around 9am and got ready to explore Williamsburg, Brooklyn. First, me and my two course-mates went to East 34th street on the Manhattan boarder to catch a ferry ride across the East river to get to North Williamsburg. It was amazing to see Queens and Brooklyn from across the river. The first thing I noticed waiting for the ferry, was that I saw a Steven Holl architecture of the Hunters Point Community Library in Queens. From only researching about him about a week ago, I found it amazing that I got to see and recognised one of his buildings.
Getting to North Williamsburg only took around 10 minuets which was a fun little ride where we could see the amazing views back in Manhattan. When we arrived, we wasn't quite sure on what to do or where to go. So we opened our minds and walked around just to see where the borough takes us. We immediately found a beautiful ice cream parlour named OddFellows Ice Cream Co. The ice cream was delicious! I chose my favorite flavour of chocolate but the raspberry sorbet was extremely tempting! We sat around for a little while and relaxed and said to each other that we would walk to South Williamsburg just to see what places we would see. Instantly, walking around we realised it was a very interesting and artistic area with the street art and independent little stores.
Every corner we turned, we found an interesting shop or piece of street art we were fascinated over. If we had more time and our feet didn't kill, I would've loved to have explored this area some more. Through our lectures, and looking at interesting brands, we saw the chocolate shop named Mast. The minimalist layout draws you to the creative packaging of the various chocolates. It was great to see this store in person and as an expensive chocolate brand, you can really understand why when entering the store.
After looking around Williamsburg, we got the ferry from South Williamsburg to Dumbo. Some other people from our fashion communications course said it is great here to take images of the view of Manhattan. Here, we could see the Brooklyn Bridge and also the Statue Of Liberty from afar. We waited from around 4:30 to 5:30 in the freezing cold just to get some nice shots of the city in the sunset and also at night. It was a breathtaking view but the cold made it difficult to want to stay. However, we braved it through.
After taking in this beautiful view, we took our last ferry back to Manhattan, to Wall Street to visit the 9/11 memorial. It was a beautiful thing to see in real life and has so much more effect than seeing on images and videos from online. The part that has the most effect is the silence and the sound of calm water falling into ground zero. This memorial to everyone who died from the 9/11 attacks is truly moving and is a great tribute to those who sadly lost their lives.
Overall, I have had a great day exploring Brooklyn and also south Manhattan learning about how the different parts of New York differ from one another.
Thanks for reading :)
