Since sixth form, i've always enjoyed British artist, David Hockney's beautiful and interesting works. My most favorite images of his are his photography joiners. These are a series of small images taken of the same place and put together to show the whole view. This is an interesting way of constructing an image and is one of the things that David Hockney is known for.
Only ever looking at Hockney's photography, It was interesting to walk around the exhibition and see the characteristics of all his works. One thing I noticed was the fact he likes the subject of water which was in some of his paintings and also photography. This gives a sense of calm and tranquility to the art which is subjected around a more contrasting image. I feel he uses water to create or lead up-to a focal point. An example of this is 'Rubber Ring' which is one of his paintings. This image shows a painting mainly made up of blue water and contrasts with a bright florescent orange rubber ring. His paintings are slightly cartoonist with lack of various shades of colour but strong one-colour shadows and simplicity in colour choice. I can only describe it as almost block colour.

Another thing I noticed about David Hockney's artwork was that the subjects in the paintings seemed very American. They reminded me of the 70s and what maybe people would wear such as the wide round aviator style glasses. Also the art deco velvet sofa gives it away in the second image below as that was a very popular style in the 70s. The image below reminds me of elderly people who may live in Florida as it suggests warmth with its warm sunshine shades and colours like warm beige and yellow tones. As most of his subjects contain water, some of the images reminded me of elderly peoples Florida retreats or even just rich Americans in the 70s and showing a luxury pool-side life.
This exhibition was amazing and I would recommend it to any art lovers! the variation of different styles David Hockney has gone through throughout his art career is very interesting and also get a sense of what his style really says about him.
